Š           Want to help two Northview teachers win a national contest?  Albert.io is a website Northview students are using for AP and ACT test preparation; and teachers using Albert have the opportunity to win prizes in Albert's "Win-By-Doing" photo contest.

Greg Christy and John Eckhart (both of the math department) have entered and to help them win, all you have to do is vote.  To vote for Mr. Christy, click https://tinyurl.com/northviewgc and to vote for Mr. Eckhart click http://tinyurl.com/northviewje .  After clicking the link, click "Vote", input the required info (including email).  An email with a verification code will be sent to you, which you can then copy back into the voting window.  You may vote for up to two entries per email, and you can vote with as many emails as you have access to.  Voting wraps up at 11:59 PM on April 15.  The top 3 teachers win new Apple products and an Amazon gift card!  (After voting, you may receive one email from Albert.io introducing their website, but that's it; you aren't signing up for anything.)  Thank you for your votes!

Š           Our spring play opened last night, and runs through Sunday.  I’m telling you Dads, nothing says I love you like taking your spouse to a high school theatre production about a love story.  You’re welcome.  Get your tickets at www.northviewtheatre.org

Mr. Vens - kvens@sylvaniaschools.org

Buses will follow their normal routes and times for students.  Buses will not be running two hours late.  It is important that students find alternative transportation or plan on bus transportation at their normal pick up time.  A study hall will be provided for those students arriving on buses at the normal start time.  Regular classes will begin at 9:35 am for all students.

Enjoy your weekend of spring-like weather,

Steve Swaggerty

Previously Announced Important Information…

Š           For all of the important details regarding upcoming senior activities, including prom, Commencement, and much more (dates, times, dress codes, etc.), see the attached pdf.

Š           There is only one spot left on the summer 2018 Leadership Summit trip to Berlin, Germany!  For more info, check out the tour website at http://www.eftours.com/tour-website/1808105ER or email Mrs. Stewart at lstewart@sylvaniaschools.org.  Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to grow as a leader, student and global citizen!

Š           If you have been impressed with the performance of a teacher or staff member this year, take a few minutes to recognize their efforts by nominating them for a Sylvania Schools Educator of the Year Award.  You can find the nomination form here.

Š           If you are concerned about your son or daughter and marijuana, consider attending this SCAT town hall meeting for parents…

Š           The Sylvania Chamber of Commerce has drastically increased the size of the scholarships they are handing out to this senior class ($4,000, $2,500, and $1,500).  Please see the attached PDF for details on the Chamber of Commerce.  Students can also stop by the Guidance Office to comb through dozens and dozens of other scholarship opportunities at your convenience.

Š           All data shows that pre-test preparation for the ACT increases test scores.  This year, we've been working to present a variety of preparation activities for our juniors, including after school classes, practice test sessions, and tutor-driven analyses of the test. Now, we can add one more opportunity to the mix: Khan Academy.

Khan Academy partners with the SAT to provide test preparation, but does not provide direct ACT preparation. However, the SAT Writing and ACT English sections are virtually identical, calling for the same knowledge and skills applied to the same test questions. So, preparation for the SAT Writing section will certainly prepare a student for the ACT English section.

Khan is offering a free, live tutoring session on March 9 for the SAT Writing section. Students must register for the session, and it promises to help them understand the types of questions they will face as well as the English writing and grammar concepts they should review. Consider registering your student for this session.

Go to this link for the Facebook event and here to access other Khan Academy SAT preparation materials.

Š           If you know of an incoming freshman for the 2017-18 school year that is coming from a private school or a district outside of Sylvania, tell them to call the guidance office to schedule an individual appointment to schedule classes for next year.

Š           The 2017-18 district calendar is ready to go.

Š           If you are receiving this e-mail, and you would like to be removed from this listproc, follow these directions:

  o     Send email to listserv@listserv.nwoca.org

o     Make the subject: SIGNOFF SYLVANIA-NORTHVIEW

You should be all set.  If you are a parent of an alumna or alumnus and are signing off because all of your kids have graduated, thank you one final time for everything you did over the years to help support our teachers, coaches, and advisors to make the NV experience a great one.

Š           Here is the new website for the Homework Matrix App (thanks to Mr. Word for fixing it for us) to type into your phones to have homework pulled from the NV Homework Matrix (which all of our teachers are using this year) directly to your phone.  Yes, if you save this “webpage” to your phone, it will serve like an app.  Once you select your son or daughter’s classes, you can see what they have for homework each day with one click.  Easy peasy.

Š           You may have noticed that the Sylvania Schools calendar switched from DynaCal to Google Calendar.  You can find all the information you need on how to set up your Google Calendar to fit your needs, depending on which schools your students attend and the activities in which they participate here and here.

Š           Our mission is to help ALL of our students find success in the classroom.  To that end, we are expanding our extra help this school year by establishing a Math Lab (located upstairs near the Media Center) and a Writing Lab (located in The Learning Center (TLC) in A Hall).  Our student surveys tell us that students are needing extra help with writing and math more than other subjects.  So, we are establishing two places that students can go anytime to get help with these subjects.  Even better, students will be able to go immediately there when they need the help.  In the past, students had to have a pass from their math teacher to go to TLC.  Let’s say you get stuck on #17 of your homework during study hall.  In the past, without a pass, you were stuck in study hall with no help.  Now, students can sign out of study hall and go the Math Lab to get help on #17.  This will help students to get the help when they need it during the school day.  We are excited that these two new extra help centers will increase opportunities for student learning and achievement at Northview.  This past spring semester, over 50 of NV’s Sophomores and Juniors helped us launch a new Study Group program this week.  We have several “drop in” options for extra help at Northview, including our Math and Writing Labs, and TLC, where students can come during free time to get extra help from NHS Seniors or from teachers.  After crunching the numbers on who is using those options, and speaking with students, we realized that inhibitions were keeping students from asking for help from those options.  Students are nervous about asking someone they do not know for help.  So, to offer another option for extra help, this one founded on the power of relationships, we are setting up Study Groups, generally led by sophomores and juniors who were nominated by their teachers who told us they would make great tutors.  These nominees signed up to help their peers this week, and we now have a database of who is willing, when they are available (including study halls, lunch periods, before and after school), and in which subjects they think they would be able to help other students.  Students can let their counselor know if they would like extra help, and we will do our best to form a Study Group for that student.  Parents and teachers can also make requests to counselors to initiate the process.  In the end, we hope to increase student achievement with this effort.  A big, huge thank you to our students who signed up to help their classmates!

Also, note that students and adults can report incidents as they happen anonymously through the mobile app – simply select the Tip Line and scroll through the listings to report responsibly.  Download it today!

Š           Do you ever shop at Target?  If so, we need your help.  Over the years, Target has donated over $15,000 to Northview.  However, many of the parents who were once part of the program have had students graduate and move on.  So, we are in need of our current parents to sign up to help us raise funds to benefit our school community and our students. Please help Northview earn money for our students by signing up on-line by clicking here and enrolling, or stopping at their customer service counter and signing up for their customer rewards program.  Our school ID with Target is 83342.  If you know of other companies that offer similar programs that we can join to help us support our students, please send those Mr. Swaggerty’s or Julie Klein’s way.

Š           Speaking of, if you shop at Kroger, please consider signing up for their customer rewards program to help the Northview Athletic Boosters, who work diligently to clothe and equip our Northview Wildcat athletes!
